Volunteering with POOPS is about so much more than walking dogs — it’s about connection, purpose, and sometimes, unexpected healing.
One of our wonderful volunteers, recently shared her story about walking a charming dog named Kajtek, and we couldn’t resist passing it on.
“I’ve been walking Kajtek for the past month — though the weather (and a bout of Covid!) did slow us down at first. YAY FOR WINTER! 🥶😷 Still, I can genuinely say I adore him.”
Kajtek, a gentle soul with a unique gait caused by a birth defect in his front leg, has brought joy and calm to his volunteer’s life at a time when she needed it most.
“I’ve been living with a long-term back injury while also caring for my father during his 11-month journey with stage 4 pancreatic cancer. Little Kajtek gave me the strength to get up, lace up my sneakers, and go for a walk. It’s something just for me — a chance to decompress, to escape the focus on my injury, and to enjoy 30 minutes of simple, peaceful ‘me time’.”
Every visit also brings the chance to chat with Kajtek’s mum, adding a social connection that is just as meaningful as the walk itself. And rain or shine, Kajtek is always ready for a slow, thoughtful stroll around the local park.

“On Sunday we got caught in the rain — and he just kept happily meandering along. Even soggy, he’s adorable!”
Kajtek’s leg doesn’t slow him down, and in many ways, he’s become a symbol of resilience and acceptance for his walker.
“If he can adapt to his own ‘quirks,’ then I can adapt to my new normal too.”
It’s these quiet, meaningful moments that make POOPS so special. Our volunteers don’t just help pets and their people — they often find that the gift is returned tenfold.
“POOPS has saved my mental health. My heart lifts every time he jumps up to greet me. Thank you for this opportunity — it means more than I can say.” 💜
