About POOPS WA Services

To be eligible, clients must:
  • Be aged 60 or over, or receiving palliative care
  • Have no family or friends available to help with pet care
  • Be the legal owner of the animal
  • Be unable to afford paid pet care services
  • Have a dog that is sterilised, socialised, and safe to handle.

Clients are referred by hospitals, social workers, home care agencies, groomers, family members, or they may refer themselves. All applications must be submitted through the POOPS WA website.

At this stage, POOPS WA focuses on supporting clients with dogs, as this is where we currently have the most capacity and experience.

No. We do not offer pet sitting, boarding, or holiday care. If these services are arranged privately between a client and volunteer, they are outside the scope of POOPS WA and are not covered by our insurance.

We do not offer pet-sitting services, but we can assist with pet transport if needed. Area Coordinators will notify the client’s emergency contact. Clients may also explore pensioner discounts at local boarding facilities.

Volunteering with POOPS WA

Volunteers must:

  • Be 18 years or older
  • Hold a current National Police Clearance or Working With Children Check
  • Be physically able to manage dogs independently.

Yes, but only registered POOPS WA volunteers are covered by our insurance. If your friend or partner would like to join regularly, we encourage them to become a volunteer too.

Only after a relationship has been established with the client and they are comfortable with the arrangement. Children are not covered by POOPS WA insurance and must not take part in handling pets.

Volunteers must be able to carry out duties independently. Unfortunately, we cannot accept volunteers who require assistance while volunteering.

No. For safety and insurance reasons, volunteers may not walk a POOPS client’s dog alongside their own pet.

We do not offer other caring/volunteer services. If these services are arranged privately between a client and volunteer, they are outside the scope of POOPS WA and are not covered by our insurance.
Some clients may ask for extra help around the house or garden. These tasks are not part of POOPS WA’s services and are not covered under our insurance. If you choose to assist with non-pet-related tasks, it is a private arrangement between you and the client.
Yes. Once your application is approved, you’ll be contacted for an induction and provided with a volunteer handbook. Ongoing support is available through your Area Coordinator.

Donations & Support

POOPS WA is run entirely by volunteers. Donations help cover essential costs such as:

  • Fuel subsidies for volunteers
  • Database, website, and communication tools
  • Event expenses and promotional materials.

Yes. POOPS WA is an incorporated not-for-profit association run entirely by volunteers.
